Letter to the Editor: Why I support Hillary Clinton

To the Editor: Recently I picked up a copy of the The Activist, and I was pleased to find two articles relating to the current presidential race. As a self-proclaimed political junkie, I enjoy hearing arguments from all sides, and I was happy to see that The Activist allowed Pastor Terry Johnson the opportunity to explain why he is backing Barack Obama. In the interest of equal time, I thought I’d explain just a few of the reasons why I support Senator Hillary Clinton.

In his letter to the editor, Pastor Johnson argued that Senator Obama would “pursue a bi-partisan effort to seek strategic solutions.” Senator Clinton actually has a record of doing just that. From getting healthcare for National Guard members to getting citizens in rural areas broadband access, Senator Clinton has proven that she will reach across the isle, working with Republican senators, in order to get things done.

Ms. Clinton has put forth a universal health care plan that will cover all Americans while lowering health care costs, and she has worked to provide healthcare for low-income children through the Children’s Health Insurance Program.

Senator Clinton is prepared to deal with the economic problems our country is facing. She understands the complexities of the issues and is ready to tackle them. She has called for a 90-day moratorium on home foreclosures as well as the freezing of subprime loan rates to help people who are at risk of losing their homes, and she will work to create new jobs by investing in clean energy technologies.

Senator Clinton has consistently been supportive of women’s rights, and she will continue to fight for women’s right to reproductive freedom and to end violence against women and children.

I will admit that, for me, the idea of seeing the first woman president is very exciting. I recognize the efforts of so many women throughout history, which have made Senator Clinton’s bid for the presidency possible, and I am excited about the impact that having a woman in charge of the United States would have on the views of women not only in this country, but around the world as well. However, I would never vote for a candidate just because she is a woman. Luckily, Senator Clinton is a woman who is both qualified and on the right side of the issues.

I know that right now, it’s not exactly cool to be for Senator Clinton. That doesn’t bother me though because I’m a democrat in suburban Cincinnati. I’m used to being outnumbered. Besides, this isn’t a personality contest–it’s a job interview. Many people voted for George W. Bush because he seemed like a likeable guy, and look where that got us. Personally, I’m not looking for a new best friend in my president. I’m looking for someone who has the experience and the knowledge to create positive change in our country and around the world. That is why I support Senator Hillary Clinton.
