While you may be aware of the excellent teaching facilities of RWC’s Electronic Media Program, you might be surprised to learn about other projects that the department has produced aiding the educational and medical fields and the community.Of note recently, two particular works have been completed and well received.
In 2006 the department completed “Fundamentals of the Extra and Intra Oral Examination.” Recognizing the need for just such a teaching tool, Mary Kaye Scaramucci, of RWC’s Dental Hygiene Program, approached the Electronic Media Program about creating the video. The final product includes a dental care provider’s video and a health care provider’s video with step-by-step descriptions of examination techniques, as well as a collection of still photos showing common oral conditions students should be familiar with.
Recently, in the “Journal of Dental Hygiene,” Margaret Fehrenbach praised the video, calling it a “well done DVD” with “an easy-to-use layout and design.” To date, copies of the video have been sold to over 50 institutions nationwide, with national and international inquiries still coming in. The Dental Hygiene Program and E-Media Program hope to collaborate again, as soon as this year, to begin working on a second edition.
Another successful project recently completed by RWC’s Electronic Media Communications Department was an educational CD-ROM on Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). Again recognizing a need for an educational tool, especially amongst adolescents in this case, Dr. Lynelle Boamah of the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, approached RWC’s E-Media Program for assistance. Funded by a Procter & Gamble grant, and under the direction of RWC’s Dave Hubble, the interactive CD-ROM is described by Dr. Boamah as “the first of its kind and will be used on a national level to educate patients throughout the country and Canada who are affected with IBD.”
“It was a fun project to do,” says Hubble. “It’s nice to be able to get back into these things that are creative. And at the end of the day, you feel good about helping other people out.
