For this issue of feature student I decided to interview a good friend and longtime classmate Steven Haas. Steven Haas was born in Munich, Germany, on June 25, 1986. He graduated from Sycamore High School and is currently seeking a major at RWC in Economics. Steven is an avid cyclist and golfer when he has free time and is a German car enthusiast. Steven currently owns an Audi a4 and is an aggressive driver. A life changing moment for Steve happened ten years ago when he and his friend Josh were riding their bicycles down Fields Ertel Road. As they were pulling out of a neighborhood, Josh was right in front of Steven, and while he was switching his bicycle gears, he witnessed the truck hit Josh. Josh was knocked off to the side of the road, and Steven went to go check on him and told him not to move.
People who witnessed the accident started to stop and find out what was going on. Within seconds though, an ambulance was at the scene. The paramedics told Steven to wait up top and give a statement to the police.
While Steven was walking back up top, he heard Josh say, “I can’t feel my legs.” Then about half hour later an ambulance helicopter came to pick up Josh. While the helicopter landed, Steven was asked by the cops to call Josh’s parents and tell them a car hit Josh.
Fortunately, a driver witnessed the accident and called for emergency assistance. Steven just watched as they took his best friend to the hospital and put the driver of the pickup truck in the back of the squad car.
Steven will always remember how close he also came to being hit and hopes that nothing like this will happen again.
