The Internet: No phishing allowed in this pond

If you have a Myspace account and use it on a regular basis, then you at least have some idea of what phishing is and how you could become a victim. Phishing is what computer hackers use to get your personal information, such as user names, passwords, and even credit card numbers.

Don’t want to be a phishing victim? There are many different ways to protect your information from falling into the wrong hands. There are anti-phishing programs and/or software that you could purchase, computer security programs such as McAfee, and you could just simply remember that looks can be deceiving.

Phishing sites and emails look just like the websites that they attempt to imitate, except for one important flaw. When logging on to websites or before entering your information, look at the toolbar to see if an unusual web address is there.

Also do not ignore the security settings of the computer software when it notifies you of the dangers of opening a certain webpage. For emails, take a good look at the return address or the envelope information if the email appears to be suspicious. This bit of information is extremely important, because phishing has been a recent threat to Bearcat On-Line accounts. Do not be paranoid of the World Wide Web. Just beware before you release your information via the Internet.
