On The Spot: How will Issue 6 affect Ohio’s economy?

Ohioans will have the opportunity to vote on State Issue 6 for Ohio’s Resort Casino on November 4. Issue 6 is pushing to legalize a $600 million resort casino in Southwest Ohio. The tax revenues will be divided up amongst all Ohio’s 88 counties based upon population. If Issue 6 is passed the casino will bring 5,000 job opportunities to the citizens of Southwest Ohio with an average pay of $34,000 a year. Ohioans are spending millions of dollars a year outside our state lines in legalized casino states such as Indiana, Michigan, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. In 1993 the State of Indiana generated gambling taxes of $842 million/year.

For this Issue I proposed this question: Do you think Issue 6 will have a positive or negative effect on Ohio’s economy, and why?

Matt Tucker, Sophomore

“I think Issue 6 will be great for Ohio’s economy, due to the economy crash of late. Any way we can pump more money into our counties for Ohio’s citizens is a positive.”

Jessica Marquis, Sophomore

“Issue 6 is a toss up for me. It sounds like it would be a fun idea, but I’m not to sure i know enough details to give an economic answer.”

Randall Back, Sophomore

“Issue 6 will save me money in gas if there were to be one in Ohio, and saving gas is helping the economy.”

Matt Klein, Sophomore

“I’ve heard Issue 6 is going to bring over 5,000 employment opportinities to Clifton County, so if it brings job opportunities to Clifton County citizens, I would say it’s good for our economy.
