Video Games: Will you survive “Dead Space”?

You are Isaac Clarke, an engineer who is called in to be a member of a team sent to perform emergency repairs on the spaceship known as the “Ishimura,” a ship designed to crack open planets and harvest them for valuable ores and materials. Something has gone wrong, and no contact can be made with the ship. As your ship boards, things go wrong fast, with your shuttle becoming seriously damaged.

When you board, things just get worse. No one seems to be around, everything is locked down, and then, strange creatures start appearing, slaughtering two members of the team before you manage to escape the ship’s welcoming center.

From there, you go on to discover that these creatures were once the ship’s crew, who in death were warped into nightmarish beings called “Necromorphs,” and the only way to stop them is to cut their limbs off with the weapons you obtain, most of which are repurposed industrial tools.

That is the basic scenario of the game Dead Space: trapped in a massive futuristic space ship that’s coming apart at the seams, desperately trying to fight off your assailants, and find both a way off the ship, and find out what caused this nightmare to occur in the first place.

The game is practically a work of art. The ambiance, the pacing, all the designs, everything is finely refined to make a game experience that is top notch. It makes you really feel like you’re there in the ship, exploring it and figuring out how to progress.

The controls work great as well, with everything handling and working smoothly. In addition, the monsters of the game, the Necromorphs, actually manage to be frightening and unsettling, something most horror games have a hard time pulling off.

All in all, I would give this game two thumbs up, five stars, and a ten out of ten, and the only reason I am keeping this so short is to prevent any spoiling of the game experience for you.
