The Great Depression: Is it happening again?

Let’s face it. America is one nation already down! The Great Depression is happening all over again (minus the stock market crash). Two reasons for this are the war and the economy. Gas prices have been sky high (even though, for now, they seem pretty normal, but let’s not get our hopes up too high). Almost every store out there is going out of business, costing lots of people their jobs. This is super difficult to have happen to any family, especially those with young kids. Everyone is struggling in some way or another.

I see this at the restaurant where I work, with people spending less money. Everyone’s hours have been cut back at least five to ten hours a week because of the struggling economy. Winter is approaching, and it’s always a slow time of year for us anyway, but with the economy struggling big time and with people hardly having any money because of jobs, fewer people are going out to eat.

Students in college are also struggling. Those needing financial aid and student loans are being declined because the banks don’t have enough money to loan. Education is an important part of everyone’s life, and without the money the students will eventually be forced to drop out until they can afford to go back.

Another big thing that’s affecting society and hurting the economy badly is the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. This war is costing Americans billions of dollars. We could be saving this money by ending the war and bringing the troops back home, and the money could go to the families in need who are struggling!

Look where we were six years ago before this war had even begun! America was a happy nation, everyone had great jobs, businesses were doing great, and money wasn’t an issue for most people. Now look at where we are: a struggling nation with a struggling economy with just about nothing!
