Winter Quarter is in full swing, and the staff in the Study Skills and Reading Center would like to remind students that it is not too early to anticipate study problems. The Center’s services can help students find success in the classroom. Are you a new student or a returning student? If you didn’t know, the RWC Reading and Study Skills Center is located in Muntz Hall Room 112K, located within the Computer Concourse. Study Skills has tutoring available in the Center for a variety of courses. Courses involving math, foreign languages, accounting, economics and writing provide their own tutoring. If interested you may stop in or call for a consultation with one of the tutors to discuss your individual needs.
Within Study Skills tutoring sessions, students receive individual attention to determine what difficulties they are experiencing in their coursework. Once their difficulties are determined, the tutor then provides strategies in the following areas: time management, note taking strategies, reading and comprehension strategies, concentration techniques, organization, memory techniques, critical thinking and test taking strategies/test review.
The tutors can help students analyze poor test results to see where they might have gone wrong. After participating in test reviews, some students have reported a one letter grade improvement on subsequent test scores. ESL students can also take advantage of weekly communication with a tutor who can provide insight into cultural idioms, expressions and history, pertaining to literature courses as well as other disciplines.
So I’m sure by now you’re wondering how much this tutoring costs. The tutoring in the Center is absolutely free to any RWC student. All the tutors involved are all professionals who have received a degree, with many years of experience working with students at every college level.
In general many sessions only last 50 minutes, but it can be arranged for a student to receive tutoring all quarter. If interested it is best to schedule an appointment, to make sure a tutor will be available.
The goal of the Center is to provide the students with the necessary tools to become proficient, independent learners. Study Skills also offer workshops on related Study Skills topics. The Workshop Solutions schedule is posted on the RWC website under “Current Students” (then click on Study Skills).
