At an all-day event in the Flory Center on February 11, there was an informational/educational meeting informing area high schools regarding the new Ohio Dual Credit System. RWC Math Professor Joel Helms and Clermont College Professor Ian Clough led the discussion.
High school math teachers were introduced to the options offered, and any teacher interested in more information could attend an informational meeting discussing the curriculum.
One issue that the dual credit system faces is the question of state funding. Professor Clough explained that they are trying to take the state funding out of it, in which case the student wishing to take the dual credit classes would have to pay the small fee of around $75 per class, still much less than what a traditional student would pay. Clough explained that some of the courses currently offered are calculus and trigonometry.
The program will help future students to prepare themselves for a college workload and to ease themselves into a college atmosphere. Clough hopes that this meeting will result in a follow up meeting that will include even more area high schools.
