Whoever said that working at a grocery store is boring, especially when you get to make the announcements and promotions over the intercomm? Half the fun is listening to these announcements! This is exactly what eMedia student Jessica Kagrise does at Biggs in West Chester. Jessica began the announcing job at the beginning of November, though she had been working at Biggs for about two and a half years prior to the new assignment. Jessica was asked to do this by a few of her managers, who liked her voice and thought that she would be perfect for the job.
“Something like this doesn’t take very long,” she said. “All the ads are delivered on Thursdays for the upcoming week, and I pick different specials that I think would be appealing to the customers.”
Sometimes a job like this can take 15 minutes at the most, maybe a bit longer. The recording part itself can take about a half hour, depending on how good it may sound.
Jessica describes this job as fun, and she can be creative in it, because in the future she wants to go into broadcasting. A job like this gets her used to hearing her own voice.
“Doing this has been really fun for me,” she said, “and it is surprising how many customers have recognized my voice and how many complements I have received!”
At Biggs Jessica does the recording on what is called the ad-caster. You’d think that you would record your things through a microphone and onto a recorder? But at Biggs really this all is just recorded into a telephone in a place called the “music room,” which is the controller room that controls the radio and volume. No fancy eMedia microphones are used for this.
So remember the next time you are at Biggs in West Chester, listen carefully to the announcements about upcoming promotions and sales, because that could be you some day!
