Where can you meet students from five continents and 24 countries? Where do students from 16 states and 30 Cincinnati area school districts get together? If you guessed a plenary session of the UN or an educational think tank in Washington D.C., you went too far. You can find this diverse body of students studying diligently at RWC’s Science Learning Lab.These findings were the result of a survey of more than 100 students that concluded during RWC’s annual Worldfest celebration. What brings people from so many different backgrounds together? Well, it seems they all want to know more about science. Students visit the Science Learning Lab over 900 times in an average week. You might even be one of the visitors.
The students who utilize the Science Learning Lab bring a rich background of culture and linguistic diversity in the pursuit of their educational goals. The multi-faceted and highly talented student body pursue a diverse spectrum of academic majors in both science and non-scientific fields. Students with strong secondary school science backgrounds are inclined to focus on competitive and rigorous pre-professional academic programs grouped under the rubric of Allied Health Sciences. Pre-professional programs include: Pre-Medicine, Pre-Pharmacy, Pre-Physical Therapy, Pre-Veterinary Medicine, Nursing, Dental Hygiene, Advanced Medical Imaging, Radiation Therapy, as well as Clinical and Lab Science & Technology.
Science Learning Lab students were also the subject of an educational research study that was published in the most recent AURCO Journal. The research determined the students’ learning styles and the method of instruction that they prefer. This study was conducted in an effort to further the Science Learning Lab’s mission of improving student academic performance. The findings helped the staff devise ways to better deliver services to students.
Raymond Walters College is committed to the development of excellence in higher education. Commensurate with this goal, students are encouraged to visit the Science Learning Lab to receive personalized attention in areas ranging from General Chemistry and Fundamental Biology, to advanced courses in Anatomy & Physiology, Organic Chemistry, and Microbiology. Students experience a personalized approach with their challenging course material, as well as the freedom to study either independently or in small groups. To supplement class material, the Science Learning Lab utilizes specific models, which enhance the learning experience for lab courses. Additionally, the Science Lab features a multi-computer room that enables students to write lab reports, download notes from Blackboard, check course progress reports, or simply to check an email.
Recently, a student from Cameroon was asked why he studied history in the Science Learning Lab, and his response was, “Every time I come in here I learn something new.” So, if you want to be studied, have fun or meet people from Palau, Uzbekistan or Ghana, consider stopping by the Science Learning Lab. The Science Learning Lab is located in SAHB 200. The hours of operation are the following:
Monday to Thursday: 8 a.m. – 5:45 p.m.
Friday: 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.
