A unique, hands-on learning experience is being offered by the RWC Department of Foreign Languages starting Winter Quarter. Service learning classes wil be taught in both French and Spanish, in which students are given the opportunity to learn a language while giving back to the community. In the French course, taught by Professor Jody Ballah, students learn the language by preparing and teaching a beginner’s course to children after school at Blue Ash Elementary.
The Spanish course, instructed by Professor Angie Woods, allows participants to work with the Spanish-speaking population from throughout Cincinnati through four different organizations.
Credit hours earned depend on the level of involvement and hours put in, and what students do depends on their level of proficiency in the language.
Of course, as Professor Ballah explained, there are academic components to both courses, such as journaling and presentations. For both classes, the prerequisite is one prior quarter of the language (including high school equivalent).
Registration is available at One-Stop, and an informational meeting will be held to explain the courses in fuller detail and decide what dates and times the classes will be held. The class times will depend on what is best for students.
