Costa Rica: Broaden Your Horizon Through Study Abroad

RWC students will once again have the opportunity to improve their Spanish language skills and learn about Costa Rican culture in the 2010 RWC Costa Rica Study Abroad Program. Participating students will live with a native Spanish speaking family in the town of Heredia, Costa Rica, learning about Costa Rican culture through 40 hours of language classes at the Intercultura Language Institute.

Students will also be required to participate in “service learning.” In 2008, students volunteered at an orphanage for young girls. According to RWC Spanish Professor Angie Woods, who will lead the 2010 program, there will be something similar on this year’s trip. Students will also be involved in a language exchange where they help native Spanish speaking people to learn English, and in turn receive help improving their Spanish.

The trip includes cultural excursions to markets, artisan towns, and various other locations in order for students to utilize their foreign language skills.

Additionally, students will experience the natural beauty of Costa Rica through excursions to Manuel Antonio National Park, Monteverde National Park, and El Volcan Arenal (Land of the Volcanos).

The estimated cost is $2,500 (not including incidental expenses, books, some meals and independent travel expenses). The application deadline is February 1, 2010.
