Biology to Host Fossil Lab for Elementary Students

The RWC Biology Department will host a fossil lab for fourth graders from the Sycamore School district, according to Department Head Karen King. Faculty and student helpers will discuss fossils, how they are formed and what type of things can form into fossils, King said. Five Biology laboratories will be reserved and open for use on Friday afternoons for the Sycamore students.

Facilitators will run three different activities for these blooming paleontologists:

Students will observe the differences between a live animal and a fossil.

They will make casts and molds to mimic the way fossils form.

And they will study fossils found in Cincinnati to form conclusions about what Cincinnati was like many years ago.

This is a great way to get young students involved in science early, King said. Dates for the event have not yet been confirmed, but King said there has been discussion of one in early February, one in mid-March, and another in late April.
