Writing Center Offers Advice and Assistance

Need help with that essay? Having a mental block on that research paper? The Writing Center at Raymond Walters, located in Muntz 112-I, behind the Computer Concourse, can help with difficulty in any kind of writing, according to Maria Damen, Lab Manager. The atmosphere is friendly and nurturing, and they are dedicated to meeting students’ needs and accommodating their busy schedules. The Writing Center provides students with the ability to be tutored by three experienced academic tutors, two of whom are English professors, Damen said. The tutors work with the students, helping them to become even better and self-directed writers, she added.

The Writing Center is an invaluable service on this campus at no additional cost, Damen explained.

Students should come in as early in the quarter as possible, she said, because during midterms or at the end of the quarter tutors are especially busy. When students come in, they should bring their assignments, ideas, drafts, and/or the final paper. Tutors can discuss essay organization, support, critical thinking, rhetorical awareness, and grammar and punctuation. They can also go over those assignments that the student does not understand.

The Writing Center has extensive hours: Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m.-8 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m.-4 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Damen encourages appointments, but walk-ins are always welcome. Appointments can be made up to a week in advance. Students can call (513) 745-5733 or just stop by to make an appointment.
