Music: Foxy Shazam Kicks Ass and Rocks Out

With their addictive piano-based melodies, intense stage presence, and acrobatic playing ability, Foxy Shazam has been scorching up the underground scene for years. While relying mostly on word of mouth, they were relatively unheard of until the 2005 release of their debut album, “The Flamingo Trigger.”

But Foxy Shazam broke though with songs such as “Dangerous Man” (with over 400,000 hits on YouTube). Consisting of Eric Sean Nally (vocals), Loren Daniel Turner (guitar), “Daisy” (Bass), Sky White (keyboard), Alex Nauth (horns), and Aaron McVeigh (drums), this rag-tag group of misfits is nothing short of awe inspiring to watch, as well as a little weird, and when I say a little weird, I mean a lot of weird. These guys are crazy as hell, but that is what makes them so entertaining to watch.

When performing, the guys of Foxy Shazam look like what can only be described as a combination of hyper six-year-olds and a pissed off chimp.

I’m not even sure if their instruments ever touched their bodies. As each song started, you could already see the flying circus start to unfold: both instrument and musician flying through the air, playing upside down, doing cartwheels, and swapping instruments, all while staying in time during the entire set.

On top of their showmanship, Foxy Shazam strides in its musical ability as well. On their Myspace page, they describe themselves as soul, post-hardcore, progressive rock and experimental rock, and after listening to them, I would have to agree with them. Their unique style of piano/keyboard infused rock, with driving, upbeat drums and guitar combo keeps me wanting more.

Eric Sean Nally’s voice fits perfectly into the eclectic mix. He has a very unorthodox singing style. In some songs, he has high piercing vocal lines like Freddy Mercury, but in other songs, he has raspy, sort of growling lines, like what you would find in many post-hardcore songs.

While Foxy Shazam is not for everyone, they are definitely worth the discovery. Go check them out.
