Everyone has at least one thing they wish they could do before they die. We sometimes put it off and come up with excuses because we’re afraid. So, where do we find the courage to do these things? Some people find it when their time on earth is coming to an end. They panic and make a list of all the things they wanted to do, and they do it.
The truth is though, that many of us don’t get that chance, and when we do, it’s too late. Well, I’m tired of waiting for courage to come my way.
You see, I have always dreamt of doing standup comedy. For years I have been writing down jokes. I kept them stashed away like a secret. I waited for the fear to go away and never did a thing. Then someone told me something that changed me. They said, “Courage isn’t about ‘not’ being afraid. It’s about being afraid and doing it anyway.”
Not long after I heard that, I discovered some of my old school friends where doing stand up. Rajiv Satyal (The Funny Indian) and Geoff Tate (who used to attend RWC) are both doing their acts in Hollywood right now. Seeing them gave me courage to do it.
So, Wednesday night I gathered my fears and took them straight over to the local comedy club. Many of my friends and family member came to cheer me on. When they called my name, I knew there was no turning back. It was scary but not near as scary as thinking I might never get to do it.
Turns out, I got a lot of laughs and enjoyed it so much I can’t wait to go do it again. It feels so good to be able to say, “I did it.”
No more ‘I wish’ for me. I did it.
