Message From the Dean: An Important Summer of Transition for RWC

Many folks have a misperception that summertime at a college is mostly downtime, filled with slow-paced days and far fewer meetings and projects. However, at Raymond Walters College the short summer break is still jam-packed with tasks. This summer is no exception, as progress will continue on several major projects along with a few new initiatives undertaken. We continue to plan and prepare for the University’s transition from quarters to semesters, which will be implemented in fall 2012. There are a multitude of issues related to this switch-in fact, almost every department within RWC will be affected at some level.

Another substantial initiative at RWC is the roll-out of a new degree, the Bachelor of Technical and Applied Studies (also called the BTAS). This exciting new program is a collaboration between RWC and Clermont College. The BTAS degree, one of the first in the state, is designed for the working adult who desires to move into a supervisory or administrative position and who already holds a technical associate degree, either Associate of Applied Science or Associate of Applied Business. With a potential launch next fall, our BTAS committee is busy promoting and recruiting for the program.

Over the summer Raymond Walters College will also welcome a new dean, Dr. Cady Short-Thompson, who takes the helm effective July 1. Dr. Short-Thompson, a lifelong Wyoming resident and University of Cincinnati alumna, is known as a high-achiever with lots of energy and enthusiasm; I believe she will well serve RWC and help us achieve additional success as we continue to meet the needs of our students and our community in new ways, and I look forward to working with Cady for a successful transition of leadership.

As I conclude my time as Interim dean, I want to thank everyone for a wonderful three years of serving in this position; it has been the most fulfilling period of my professional career. For those students graduating this spring, please consider participating in Commencement as it is a wonderful celebration of your efforts and, for me personally, as I get to shake hands with RWC graduates during the ceremony. For all students, I hope you enjoy much continued success, both in your academic pursuits and life goals.
