Professor Paula Spievack Laid to Rest

On Friday May 7 Academic Tutor and Adjunct Instructor Paula Spievack passed away at the age of 59. The day before her son’s graduation from law school in Lexington, Virginia, she unexpectedly had a heart attack. Her funeral service was held Sunday, May 23, at Weil Funeral Home.Spievack graduated with a BA at UC and continued her education at Xavier where she received her masters degree in Education and Special Education. In 1992 she began working at Raymond Walters in the English Study Skills and College Reading Center.

Along with her passion for helping students, Paula’s interests included vocabulary, reading, and animal rights, specifically SPCA. (Instead of flowers at her funeral, donations to the SPCA were encouraged).

According to co-worker and close friend Della Colmar, “She loved her dog like another kid” and was said to be reading around three books at all times.

“She was very into study skills,” Colmar said, “very into students, giving them the skills to be used in any subject, to feel self-confident, to grow. She helped them to be independent.”

“It’s weird coming in and she’s not here,” Colmar continued. “She was a very good friend, and she will be missed.
