The “MLB The Show” franchise has been the best baseball video game for the past few years, and this year is no different. The graphics are sharp, game play is crisp, and all of the fundamentals are right in MLB 2010. I am not saying there aren’t any bugs that come along with this game, but they are outweighed by the presentation of the game overall.
It has a variety of modes that games are used to seeing: Exhibition, Season, Franchise, Manager, Rivalry, online ranked matches, and league play.
However, the best part of this game has to be the “Road to Show” mode. This is when you start out as a player in the minor leagues and work your way up to Major League stardom. It is pretty difficult to work your way up because the minor league pitchers throw a lot faster than in real life. Most minor league pitchers do not throw 95mph, but in The Show they do.
This is one mishap, but it makes it difficult, and when you actually make it to the majors, it is even more rewarding.
This year, developers made the stadiums look as realistic as possible. They look amazing, with every sign and light, and they even capture the crowd well. Every once in a while, you see the fans hitting a beach ball around, just as they do in real life.
The player models are very detailed, and the camera angles are great, especially during close plays at the plate.
The lag in online play really hurts MLB 10 and might be the worst bug of all. The online slowdown causes players to miss the ball in the outfield because of stutter steps and when you’re batting it can sometimes skip the pitcher throwing the ball. This doesn’t give you much time to swing.
Online play isn’t always this bad and can be fun, but other times it can simply be annoying.
This isn’t a perfect game, but one that is a heck of a lot of fun. I would recommend this game to anyone who likes baseball simulations. The developers may not have an MVP type of game, but they have a solid all-around game. With that being said, MLB 2010 The Show has a few bugs, but the graphics, fundamentals and overall Big-League atmosphere make it one heck of a baseball game and one that baseball fans should at least look into purchasing.
