The Internet: Have You Rated Your Professor?

Every time I set up classes, I find myself seeking opinions on professors. The last thing I want is to have someone who doesn’t teach the way I learn. As usual, the Internet comes to the rescue with RateMyProfessors.com!When you first arrive, there are three tabs: Find a professor, Find your school, and Rent your textbooks. I searched by school and “Raymond Walters College” led me straight to our page.

Each professor is listed alphabetically by name, department, total ratings, overall quality, easiness, and a fun “Hot?” category. You can even filter by department, and, if your professor isn’t there, you can select “Add a professor” to be the first to rate them.

Upon selection, you’ll immediately see the professor’s overall rating, based on a five-point rating system in Overall Quality, Helpfulness, Clarity, Easiness, and Hotness, as well as a list of comments and ratings by other students.

By clicking the “Rate this Professor” button, you get the chance to give some kudos or get even. You can vote for each category and write up to 350 characters in a comment box. However, before your rating is official, you will have to enter the class and section numbers (i.e. HIST 101), so make sure you know them.

After submitting the entry, it is immediately viewable by everyone, including teachers. You remain anonymous, allowing some very truthful comments. Recognizable teachers, such as Mike Roos, Dr. Elise Goodman, and Ruth Benander, are already there. However, more students need to use this site before it’s a truly reliable rating system.

RateMyProfessors.com is a bit cluttered with ads, but it’s an easy-to-use, simple website. It’s not hard to find your professors, and if they aren’t there, you can add them. You don’t have to create a log-in screen name either, which makes this site quick, easy, and fun to use. It’s a great way to scope out a professor beforehand or give them what’s coming after-the-fact.

The only real downside is it only works when most of the students use it, so don’t hesitate to surf on over to RateMyProfessors.com and bolster our ratings!
