RWC Adds French to Study Abroad Lineup

During the summer of 2011, students will be able to embark on a two week study abroad program in French to Quebec City, Canada from June 19 until July 2, 2011. Students will study French language and French Canadian culture by participating in language immersion classes at an accredited International Institute in Quebec City, excursions and field trips, cultural activities and readings, and group reflection. Students successfully completing this program will receive three undergraduate RWC credits towards their degree.

Participants will have the choice of living in the college residence or can experience French Canadian culture by partaking in a homestay, which can give them the sense of how a French Canadian family lives versus what they are used to in the Americas.

During the weekends, for an additional cost, students will have the option of going on long distance excursions such as whale watching at the mouth of the St. Lawrence River or a visit to Montreal for the internationally renowned jazz festival.

To be eligible to participate in this study abroad program, applicants must have taken one full year of college-level French Language (or equivalent). This requirement is extremely important, since Quebec City is a French speaking city.

After attending French language classes during the morning, students will also take a cultural class with RWC French Professor Jody Ballah, who also serves as the coordinator for the program. Students will complete readings, reflective assignments and a research project on an element of French Canadian culture of their choice.

The intended cost for the French Canadian experience is $2,000 plus RWC tuition. However, participants will have the option of saving money by driving to Quebec City instead of flying.

More information about deadlines and other important dates can be found at http://www.rwc.uc.edu/saec/Quebec.html or by emailing Professor Ballah at jody.ballah@uc.edu.

During 2010 International Education Week from November 15-19, each study abroad program will have a stand promoting the three different programs being offered in Summer 2011, Costa Rica, Great Britain, and Quebec.

On Tuesday, November 16, 2010 Professor Ballah will be presenting a culturelogue on Quebec at 1 p.m. in Muntz 349B followed by a showing of a Quebecois film from 2-4 p.m. in the same room.

This will be a way to learn more about the French culture, while also learning more about the study abroad program.

It is highly recommended to attend any portion of the 2010 International Education Week to receive valuable information about study abroad programs, international film viewings and international food sampling.
