Thursday, November 11 is Veterans Day and RWC is recognizing its own veterans with a display case outside of Muntz 119 containing photographs along with service information of those veterans who have a connection to the College. RWC Police Officer Jeff Polly, who is coordinating the display case project, touched on the effort in a community-wide e-mail to faculty and staff: “The message during Veterans’ week,” he said, “is to honor present and past veterans and to show that Raymond Walters College has faculty and staff members that served in the United States military. It is also to show the current veterans taking classes at RWC that they can accomplish their next mission of adapting to civilian and college life by looking around them and seeing that they can make the adjustment as we have.”
Veterans Day has been an officially observed holiday since 1926. Initially declared Armistice Day by Congress in 1926 recognizing the German signing of the armistice with the allies at the end of World War 1, Armistice Day was officially changed to Veterans Day on June 1, 1954, after Congress changed the name to “Veterans” extending the tribute to all who have served.
The case is on display November 8-13 in recognition of Veterans Week.
