New Funding for RWC Study Abroad Programs

At the beginning of the fall 2010 quarter, the activist presented information to all students, staff and faculty members introducing three new and exciting study abroad programs. The members of the RWC Study Abroad and Exchange Committee met with the new RWC Dean Cady Short-Thompson. In this meeting, the committee and Dean Short-Thompson discussed logistics regarding the budget. Without making any cuts to programming, the new cost of the 2011 British Study Abroad Program is now only $2,950. In previous quoting, the estimated cost would have been around $3,500. Although the new price doses not include RWC tuition, the Committee hopes that if they receive a better deal on airfare, the estimated price will be lowered again.
Dean Cady also committed to $15,000 for study abroad scholarship funds for RWC students. The scholarship money would be awarded on a need basis and by merit. When the new scholarship is lumped together with the UC international Education Abroad Grant, students may be able to have their study abroad cost reduced to about $1,000.
The contribution that Dean Cady is offering is the only financial support that the study abroad programs have received in the history of the college. Here at the Activist, we applaud Dean Cady Short-Thompson for her willingness to make study abroad an option for as many students as possible.
