My World: Happy STD?

It’s that lovely time of the year again. Through all the wintery slush and ice comes a holiday that will either warm or break your heart. It’s the one and only, Valentine’s Day. While couples embrace each other and exchange cheesy singing cards, roses, and chocolates, I will be alone. For the first time in two years, I am single on Valentine’s Day.

I can’t say this is a bad thing though. The good part about it is that there are also a lot of single guys out there who could be my potential Valentine’s Day date. However, there is also a chance that I could be left entirely alone watching a tear jerking romantic movie. Whatever the case may be, I intend to make the very best of this somewhat silly holiday, even if the only person I spend it with is myself.

If I do happen to find myself in a pit of sadness, I can always remember that my Valentine’s Day isn’t nearly as bad as others may have been.

For example, when my step-dad, Jim, was in college, he planned out an elaborate way of expressing his love to his at-the-time girlfriend. His plan included painting a large heart on the blacktop outside of her dorm. On the inside of this heart, Jim was to write “Happy Valentine’s Day. Love, Jim” in white spray paint. A cute idea, borderline illegal, but very charming.

However, things did not go as planned. Once the heart was complete, Jim encountered a problem. After he had written the word “Happy,” he realized that he did not have enough room to write out “Valentine’s Day.” So Jim opted for the abbreviation…VD. Back in the day, VD was also the abbreviation of venereal disease. It wasn’t until the 1990’s that venereal disease was more commonly referred to as a sexually transmitted disease.

This plan became an absolute disaster. Jim’s big red heart loudly displayed “Happy VD. Love, Jim.” He was haunted by the thoughts of his fellow classmates spreading rumors about a non-existent STD, and his actual heart was crushed when his girlfriend never spoke to him again.

So with that being said, I wish everyone, single or taken, a happy and safe Valentine’s Day!
