For me, the Oscars are like the Superbowl. For both film buffs and actors alike, this night is what they spend months preparing for. This is the big leagues. When you’re nominated, you know you’ve made an impression on the world, and it sure looks good on the resume. As Anne Hathaway says, it’s the “biggest night in Hollywood.”
Indeed, it’s a night full of glitz, glamour and anticipation. Everyone steps up his or her game, especially on the red carpet. As far as outfits, the Oscars are unlike any other award show. It’s all about the prestige and the elegance, a higher caliber of fashion.
As such, it was much harder to pick a top three and a lot harder to find my worst three. But, as always, I’m here to please.
So, without further ado, my best and worst dressed:
In third place, the famous French Canadian diva, Celine Dion. She wore a bland white dress that held no favor for her figure. There was no dimension whatsoever. It was lackluster from the boring top to the boring bottom.
In second place, and woe to me to say this, was Florence Welch from the fantastic band Florence + The Machines. She was on my best-dressed list for the Grammys, so I’m really disappointed to see her here now. Still, her dress was frumpy and outdated. The lacy, un-dimensional top didn’t mesh with the layered bottom.
My worst went to none other than starlet Scarlett Johansson. Her dress was a deep fuchsia mess of lace that seemed like it struggled to be in harmony with itself. Even her hair was a mess. It looked as though she took a heavy nap right beforehand and woke up in a hurry. My dear Scarlett, what happened to the elegant vixen we once knew?
Moving on to my best of the evening, in third place, was the always-stunning Halle Berry. I’ve never once seen Halle look bland on the red carpet. She always seems to know what fits and flatters her and what doesn’t.
While her dress was very glittery and loud, it was so in all the right ways. Learn from the best, ladies: if the bottom is elaborate, then make sure the top is simple; it’s all about balance.
In second place was actress and host of the Oscars this year: Anne Hathaway. Wearing a red vintage dress by Valentino, Anne was nothing short of stunning. It fit her perfectly, hugged her hips here and bustled there. Enough said.
My best was none other than the lovely and talented Mila Kunis. She wore a light purple gown with plenty of layers and just enough beauty. It fit her perfectly and hung in all the right ways. It was elaborate without being an eyesore.
Divas of the red carpet, take note, when you’re wearing an elaborate dress make sure to keep your jewelry as simple as possible, as Mila has done. Bravo Miss Kunis, I salute you.
