Fashion Trends: Spring has Sprung

Did you miss me? Well, never fear. Because I’m back with a vengeance and plenty of style tips and fashion reviews to go around. Since we last spoke, the flowers have bloomed, the air is warm, and spring is fully in session. But while the ground was still cold, the runway was red-hot full of spring trends.

This year, retro is in. Coats from the sixties, dresses from the seventies and flare jeans. Accompanying them: flatforms, mixed prints, and large bangles.

I’m here to tell you one thing: these are all wrong. Well, besides the bangles and mixed prints. This just in: the seventies called and they want their style back A.S.A.P.

The past should stay in the past, unless you decide to modernize it. Besides, tucked in flare jeans shouldn’t have ever happened-in this decade or the next.

Citrus colors? No thanks. Trench coat-like dresses? That’s a joke in and of itself.

Let me set the record straight. It’s spring. Girls: go for bright, light colors. Bold pastels. Prints are a must have. Fun, vintage tees are great. Fitted blazers are a must for evening outings; they go with everything from dressing up jeans and a tee shirt to a fun and flirty cocktail dress.

Stylish sunglasses are also a must. Spring is all about being fun and colorful.

Guys: spring is all about fun, bold tees. Vests are great. While I am not a big fan of shorts, make sure the length fits your style. Too short says either “I’m too stylish for my own good” or “I’ve not been stylish since the Sixties.” Too long will look awkward and ill fitting (almost like a pair of girl’s culottes-which, by the way, girls, shouldn’t ever happen).

A little word of advice between guys: want to catch a girl’s eye? Wear plaid, especially at this time of year.

It’s also important to mention that the Kentucky Derby is coming up on May 6-7. The Derby has always been a very fashion-forward event, full of big, Southern hats and spring dresses. If you plan to go, make sure to wear something fashionable and classy. Large, matching hats for the ladies are also an important accessory.

Stay stylish. Stay classy. Until next time, this is Josh Newman, signing off.
