Music: Protest The Hero Raises the Bar

Protest The Hero, a progressive metal band from Ontario, Canada, recently released their third album, “Scurrilous,” on March 22. They have always been known for their complex riffs and unique style. You would think that a band who has had great success in the past would have trouble topping their previous album, “Fortress.” The new album has a very similar sound to the last, while also including crunchy off-time riffs, complex wizardly leads, and bass drops. The vocals are somewhat different than on previous albums, with much less screaming than they have been known for, but there is still a whole lot of passion in Rody Walker’s tenor howl and all of the lyrics for that matter.

Protest The Hero has a sound like nobody else, switching from heavy complex riffs into jazzy realms. They are one of those bands that just gets better with time, and this album demonstrates that. Anyone who is a Protest The Hero fan should not be disappointed with this album.
