Reds Rolling, But How Far?

As interleague play has begun, the Cincinnati Reds are looking as strong as, if not stronger, than they did last season. In the final game of the series against the Cardinals, the Reds actually had the same record they had last season. The difference? The Reds actually swept St. Louis in a series this season. However, they’ve also had their struggles, getting swept most recently by the Cleveland Indians and Pittsburgh Pirates.

It seems as if every time the Reds have a flash of something great happening, they go on an extended losing streak. This doesn’t concern me though. I’ve watched the Reds carefully for the past few seasons and noticed a few things.

Firstly, they have the right mindset. They all know they’ve been brought in or kept here because they’re winners.

Second, Joey Votto’s MVP season last year was a huge achievement that has residual effects this season. All his teammates have stepped up their games, specifically Brandon Phillips and Drew Stubbs.

And finally, the pitching. At times it’s flawless. And other times…well, the other team might as well be playing t-ball.

The Red’s single biggest problem is their inconsistency in pitching. I watched Travis Wood pitch a perfect five innings against the Indians, before giving up four runs that tied the game in the sixth.

I don’t think Votto will win MVP again this year. Not because he’s not capable of it, because he is, but because winning isn’t an individual effort. It’s the whole team.

If the Cincinnati Reds look to make a deep run in the playoffs (yes, I’m predicting they’ll get at least that far), they will need Aroldis Chapman to return from the minors and be as awe inspiring as he was last season, in addition to Arroyo, Volquez, and Wood to be solid regular starters.
