The Internet: New Website Stumbles Across the Internet

Searching on Google or Yahoo for information can be a little difficult sometimes. You might not be able to find what you are looking for until you hit the third or fourth page.

However, nowadays, people are discovering new and better innovations in how to get information from the Internet. A relatively new website called StumbleUpon has set a new bar for presenting information to an audience of all ages.

StumbleUpon is a website that brings information of all kinds to a person’s naked eye. Once you sign up for this free website, you are asked what subjects interest you. These subjects can range from photography all the way to politics.

Each time you sign into your account, a new article shows up from a different website such as incredibox.fr (a website for beatboxing), funnyordie.com, and guardian.co.uk (an English newspaper). Any time you receive a suggestion for a new website, you can link it to your own Facebook, Twitter, or email to share with others.

The miracle genius behind StumbleUpon is CEO Garrett Camp. Camp received a masters degree in Software Engineering at the University of Calgary in Canada, and in 2001, while he was still a graduate student, he started to develop the website.

According to mashable.com, Camp says, “A couple friends and I were basically interested in starting a company, building something new. We started coming up with ideas, and it was probably a month until we realized [StumbleUpon] was the best one. After that point, we started to formalize it, created equity and it kind of went from there.”

The company first started out as just a Firefox add-on and then quickly branched out from there due to the fact that they wanted users to be able to view their website from literally anywhere, including smartphones, iPads, and other devices.

Then in 2007 Ebay bought out StumbleUpon, but in 2009 Camp and his team bought it back, due to the fact that there were no changes going on while they were with Ebay.

Now, since the company is completely independent and has at least 11,834,636 users worldwide, it has a net worth of at least $30 billion.
