Last week (Oct. 31-Nov. 4), UCBA held a celebration of National Non-Traditional Student Week in Munz Hall Lobby. The purpose of this week is to “highlight the non-traditional college student, who typically balances college, work, family, and community involvement,” said Helen Kegler, UCBA Director of Multicultural Affairs.
Members of the UCBA Student Parent Support Group sponsored the activities during the week, which included a service project on Monday, October 31, to provide weekend meals to children at South Avondale School; a Mini Expo on Wednesday, with information tables; and a Friday presentation on “Ultimate Money Skills.”
Deeanna Garner, President of the Student Parent Support Group, felt the celebration went well. “It was to give students resources, the help they need, and to let them know someone cares,” she said.
Garner was introduced to the non-traditional student organization by her sister, who later introduced her to Helen Kegler, who also works with many non-traditional students.
Garner started to go to their meetings, and the more she became involved, the more she gained experience.
“Helen understands that we have busy lives and she wants us to succeed,” Garner explained.
The organizations who had information tables at the Mini Expo on Wednesday included Sam’s Club Pharmacy, Vision & Benefits, Saving African American Families, Women Helping Women, Booji Bee—independently owned clothing company, Alonda-Like Sunday Salon and Spa, Dress for Success, Legal Aid, Free Will Clinic, and 4C Daycare.
