In honor of World AIDS Day, December 1, the UC-BA College Akwaaba Student Organization is sponsoring a two-day event to increase awareness of HIV/AIDS and encourage support in the quest to stop AIDS-related deaths. The theme for World AIDS Day this year is “Getting To Zero.” The goal for global involvement through organizations and individuals is to have a society of zero AIDS-related deaths.
On Wednesday and Thursday, November 30-December 1, Akwaaba will sponsor an information table offering brochures and pamphlets on HIV/AIDS. Red ribbons will also be offered to the college community to wear in support of the cause to prevent and stop AIDS-related deaths.
An added feature on November 30 will be individual testing for HIV/AIDS for those who would like to take advantage of this option. Representatives from the Stop AIDS Organization will be on hand to perform private, individual testing, with immediate results given. Akwaaba members will be at the table from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on November 30 to register those who would like to be tested.
On Thursday, December 1, which is World AIDS Day, the information booth in the Muntz Lobby will have pamphlets and fliers about HIV/AIDS and red ribbons that the college community can wear to show support for the goal of “Getting to Zero ” as a society with zero AIDS-related deaths.
Akwaaba is a student organization that promotes academic excellence, social acceptance, support, and social interaction among UC Blue Ash students. Akwaaba means “Welcome,” and the members extend their arms to all African American students at UC-BA, as well as other ethnicities.
The group looks forward to sponsoring other events like various fundraisers, social events, and participation in the National African American Read-In and Worldfest.
Akwaaba members encourage students to open their minds to the possibilities of the UC-BA black community developing unity from the leadership and activities sponsored by Akwaaba. Small things can lead to big outcomes!
