We all know that as we get older our body changes and for that reason, I ask myself should there be a law that people over a certain age should have to retake the driver’s test?
My answer of course, is YES. I understand that teenagers cause plenty of accidents each year, “FACT ON HOW MANY A YEAR” in fact. I feel as if this world is so concentrated on the aspects of teen driving, that we ignore the fact that it’s just as dangerous, if not more dangerous for elderly drivers to be on the road “FACT ON HOW MANY A YEAR”. Your eye sight and reflexes decrease overtime, which makes it difficult to see road hazards and to react fast enough to avoid accidents.
Since the age of 16, I have had my license and so far I have been hit by more elderly then younger drivers. In fact the most serious accident that changed my whole perspective on driving was the accident where an elderly driver claimed that they couldn’t see my car. At the time of the accident, I owned a dark green car, the weather was perfect and I was in a line of traffic at a red light. Is my point proven yet?
The government needs to take action and create a law about retaking the driver’s test after a certain age. Those who are upset and object to my opinion are probably those who wouldn’t pass the test. If that’s the case then they probably shouldn’t be on the road. The government provides other ways of transportation rather than driving yourself; if it’s expensive then that’s where the government also needs to step in and provide cost affective transportation for the elderly. We already know that driving is a risk we take every day but those who double the risk shouldn’t be on the road endangering themselves and other drivers.
