On Thursday April 19, 2012 in Muntz Lobby students who have participated in service learning at UCBA presented posters that showcased their projects. The expo took place between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The student’s posters were viewed by many UCBA faculty and students throughout the day.
Winners this year were: Jannett Said, First Place; Katy Beyrer, Second Place; and Brittany Ellis, Andrew Hartman, and Melissa Schmerr, Third Place.
This year’s expo was open to all UCBA students who have participated in a service learning program in the past year. There were a total of 37 students who presented posters. The service learning programs ranged from those that include aspects of service learning to those such as Professor Ballah’s French tutoring program, which was based entirely on service learning.
Additionally, there were three student ambassadors who helped the participating students set up their posters in the lobby of Muntz. The student ambassadors were extremely helpful in making this year’s expo such a success.
The posters were judged by a panel and were awarded first, second, and third place prizes. First place was awarded to a sociology student and both second and third places were awarded to students who participated in the French tutoring program.
This year was the first time that a service learning expo has been held at UCBA. Because of the location of the expo many people were able to view the students’ posters between classes or during their break.
Participants of this year’s expo had the opportunity to discuss the contents of their posters with both Dean Cady Short-Thompson and Associate Dean Marlene Miner. In addition, Michael Sharp, the director of all service learning programs at UC attended and talked with the students.
Everyone who presented a poster was given a certificate of participation signed by Dean Short-Thompson. The student ambassadors also helped to distribute the certificates to participants.
The service learning expo was a wonderful way for students to display their accomplishments to others at the university. If you would like to view more imaghttps://www.facebook.com/ucblueashes of this year’s expo visit https://www.facebook.com/ucblueash.
