For college, reading is an essential skill if any student wants to do well in any major. The UCBA Writing Center offers reading tutors to help students improve those skills as well as their comprehension and retention.
Nancy Dick is one of the newest reading tutors to the Center, and her job is to sit down with students one-on-one and guide them through what it takes to “actively read.”
Nancy has been a critical reading and developmental writing instructor at NKU for the last 10 years and is new to UCBA for more reading-based instruction. She enjoys developing relationships with the students she works with and helps them develop strategies to fit their individual needs. Nancy also helps students break down what they’re reading at the time and learn how to manage that time better.
John Fischer is also one of the newest reading tutors to the Writing Center. John is a UC graduate with a degree in Communication Arts, a Masters in Education, and a Graduate Post-Secondary Literacy Instruction certificate.
He is now at UCBA to use his many years’ of experience to help students improve their reading skills at a more personal level, working one-on-one with students. John especially enjoys working with the second language learners, who are students from other cultures with little English reading experience. He feels it’s rewarding to help them not only comprehend the language, but to increase their analytical and critical reading skills as well.
Nancy and John are both available to all UCBA students, who can set up appointments with them through Starfish (found on Backboard). Writing Center Director Maria Damen can be contacted with any other questions at maria.damen@uc.edu.
