Leading up to Super Bowl XLVII, there was so much hype and excitement for both teams. I think it was because both of these teams have not been to this stage of the game in a while.
The last time the Ravens went to the Super Bowl was back in 2000, and the last time the 49ers played was 1995, when Steve Young was still their quarterback. Therefore, this heavily anticipated match was very entertaining and suspenseful.
As the Super Bowl started, the 49ers got the ball first. The Ravens had deferred to the second half. The 49ers’ first play of the game was successful for a first down but was brought back because of a penalty for an illegal formation.
There was a lot of tension, emotion, and hostility in the game. Players from both teams after certain plays were over would often do extra pushing and shoving just because of how big the game was.
As the game continued, the Ravens struck the scoreboard first with a touchdown pass from Joe Flacco to Anquan Boldin. That made the score 7-0, Ravens. Then as the game continued, the Ravens started to run away with the lead.
At halftime they were up 21-6. When both teams took the field after halftime, an unexpected play happened. Jacoby Jones ran back the kickoff for 108 yards and a touchdown. After that play, I thought to myself that the 49ers were going to lose by a big margin.
However, two plays after the return, the power in the stadium went out for about 35 minutes. When the power returned, the 49ers came out a different team and scored on their upcoming drive with a touchdown pass from Colin Kaepernick to Michael Crabtree.
That made the score 28-13. As the game progressed, the 49ers kept doing well and continued to score points until the score was 31-29, Ravens. Baltimore then drove for a field goal to increase the lead to 34-29.
As the 49ers were driving down field in the Fourth Quarter, they were stopped on a goal line stand by the Raven’s defense, which had Ray Lewis at the helm.
When the Ravens got the ball back after a turnover on downs by the 49ers, they ran the clock down to only four seconds left, when their punter deliberately took a safety, making the score 34-31.
When the Ravens kicked the ball off back to the 49ers, Ted Ginn looked for a moment as if he might have a chance to run it back for the win, but he was tackled, and the Ravens won the Super Bowl XLVII, 34-31.
So Ray Lewis ended his career on top, with his second Super Bowl ring.
