The UCBA Writing Center offers Study Skills tutoring from its one and only Study Skills tutor, Sharon Disher.
This is a helpful way for students who are struggling with test anxiety, time management, or simply lack of focus, to receive the necessary techniques to overcome those barriers.
Disher will sit down one-on-one with students and personally find out their source of stress and what it is that constricts them from taking tests well (over any discipline).
She then helps students work through it by teaching them preparation, time management, note taking skills, and textbook reading skills. She also goes over old tests with students and finds skills they can use for the next time.
Study Skills tutoring also offers Workshops, a creative book filled with 15 different strategies on how to improve studying and test taking.
Three key sources include “Lecture Notes”-improving preparation; “Thinking Outside of the Book”-comprehending textbooks more efficiently, and “Time Flies”-strategies for managing time.
Workshops also includes a schedule to help students prioritize their busy days and find time for studying.
Disher is also known for creating “Snippets,” which are creative flyers sent out via email and include a variety of topics with tips and brief reminders on how to get through the school year academically. A website with these will be coming out in the fall.
Scheduling a session with Disher can be done through StarFish on Blackboard, or walk-ins are also welcome.
The Writing Center is in Muntz 234 and can be reached by phone at 745-5733.
