Multicultural events celebrated at UCBA

The multi-cultural department is now planning The National African American Read-In. The NAARI is held during the month of February. Its purpose is to emphasize literacy among African-Americans during African-American history month.

The NAARI is endorsed by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) and the Black caucus of the NCTE.

Read-ins are held to focus on literacy. Anyone can participate in a read-in, but the prose and poetry read must be authored by an African American.

Read-ins can be two or more people and as simple or elaborate as you wish to make it. As a participant you can read or be an observer to be counted in the read-in.

At UCBA, our read-in will be held in the Muntz lobby on Monday, Feb.20, from 11:30 a.m. to 1p.m. A guest speaker, Dr. Nikki M. Taylor, an author, will begin the read-in.

Taylor is a teacher of history on the Clifton campus and is the author of Frontiers of Freedom Cincinnati’s Black Community, 1802-1868. Taylor will kick off our read-in with comments and excerpts from her book, followed by discussion or comments.

Following Taylor, faculty, students, and staff will read short selections from prose and poetry authored by African-Americans.

The audience will also enjoy free bookmarks, free children’s books offered to UCBA student parents, a bibliography of books and poetry authored by African=-Americans, and a sampling of southern cuisine.

Students are encouraged to volunteer to read short selections during the read-in. Email keglerhr@ucmail.uc.edu or call 745-5691 to volunteer or for additional information.

Asian New Year Celebrated

The multi-cultural department celebrated the Asian New Year on Wednesday, Jan. 25. A Chinese proverb states that all creations are reborn on New Year’s Day. The Chinese New year is a celebration of change…. Out with the old and in with the new!

The events that occur during New Year’s Day impact your life for the rest of the year. Be careful in your actions. Be selective with what you eat. Greet people who will bring you joy. To ensure a prosperous and healthy year, you should enhance and stimulate positive energy flow at home, at your business and at work.
