This past summer, Raymond Walters College Spanish Professor Debbie Themudo led a group of eleven students on a trip to Costa Rica to explore the culture and to study the Spanish language. Of the eleven students, six were from Raymond Walters College. The group was in Costa Rica for two weeks, and each student stayed in a home with a local family. The students spent their time in Costa Rica studying Spanish, visiting local attractions, and volunteering.
For four hours a day, students studied the Spanish language at the Intercultura Language School in Heredia, Costa Rica. All students on the trip had already completed at least one year of college-level Spanish. At the school, the students met and formed relationships with locals who were, at the same time, learning English.
During their free time, students participated in many local activities, including dancing and cooking classes. They also traveled to the Arenal Volcano and to Tortuga, a small island off the shore of Costa Rica. Students gave back to the local community by volunteering twice at a local orphanage for girls ages 5-18.
Professor Themudo has since retired from RWC, but next summer, another group, to be led by Professor Angie Woods, will be traveling to Costa Rica for a program very similar to last summer’s.
