Summer of 2007 looks to be a blockbusting scorcher

Hollywood hasn’t been the most creative city in America for quite sometime and everyone knows that. However, seeing movies, no matter how bad they are, is a pastime for Americans that will never stop. Shoot, even some of us love crappy cinema. I’ll admit it–I saw “Snakes on a Plane” and enjoyed myself. All of this is evidenced by the movies coming out this summer that are sure not only to disappoint, but also to bring Hollywood to a new low. However, there is a catch: I will enjoy seeing every single one of them. In fact, I’m looking forward to the surefire blockbusters, and I’ll probably be the first in line.

There is a plethora of sequels and tired storylines coming out this summer that will all stick to the same formula–big action, big special effects, same plots, and same big ticket sales.

There are probably eight movies coming out this year that are the most anticipated. These include “Live Free or Die Hard,” “Transformers,” “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix,” “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer,” “Shrek the Third,” “Blades of Glory,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End,” and “Spider-man 3.” As you can see, most of these are sequels.

“Live Free of Die Hard” is the fourth installment of the “Die Hard” franchise, and from looking at the preview, it might be amazing. Bruce Willis reprises his role as John McClain, and the visual effects look stunning. This comes out in late June.

“Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” is probably going to be the biggest hit of the year, as Harry enters his fifth year at Hogwarts. This might be the last film for most of the cast as almost all of them are maturing much faster than the movies can be made. However, Harry finally kisses a girl on film, so at least this movie has that going for it.

“Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer” is the first sequel from the surprise hit franchise. The visual effects again look stunning, and it’s interesting to see The Silver Surfer as a villain on the big screen. The fanboys are sure to see it simply because of that.

“Shrek the Third” is obviously the third Shrek film and includes the same cast of characters as always. I’m a huge fan of the Shrek movies, and I’m sure it will not disappoint, even though the franchise might be getting tiresome.

“Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” is the last movie in the Pirates trilogy. I’m excited to see Geoffrey Rush reprise his role of Barbarossa. The last Pirates movie had the biggest opening weekend in history, as it smashed Spiderman’s record by over $35 million. This could be a surprise smash.

Speaking of Spiderman, the much anticipated third film could also be the biggest hit of the summer. Three villains are on deck and a lot of fans are pumped to see Venom come into the picture. Spidey will again deal with the Green Goblin, only it’s his best friend Harry, and take on the surpise villain, Sandman, played by Thomas Hayden Church of “Sideways” fame.

Now, the other big movies to come out after June are two new films that we’ll feel we’ve already seen before. The first is “Transformers,” a movie I’ve been waiting to see for 22 years. I cannot wait for this over-the-top action flick about aliens that can turn into cars. Steven Spielberg produces, while Michael Bay directs. This is a can’t-miss blockbuster with those two on deck.

The other repeat is “Blades of Glory,” which is the new Will Ferrell movie. He plays a figure skater. That’s all I have to say.

Sure, there are other movies coming out this year (I am most excited about “300,” which comes out pretty soon), but these are the for sure blockbusters.

Have we seen all these movies before? Absolutely, but I’m still excited to see them. And, as long as there are people like me out there, Hollywood is going to keep churning out the same crap for years to come.

Most avenues of filmmaking have already been tapped, so let’s just take what we’ve been dealt and make the best of it. I know I will, and chances are, I’ll see you there! So keep your d**n cell phone off!
