Beloved English professor will be greatly missed

Sylvia Edna Moore Thompson
November 4, 1937- July 9, 2006
This summer the RWC campus suffered the loss of beloved English Professor Sylvia Thompson. Everyone who knew her said that Sylvia had a passion for education, believing that it was the key to success.

Ms. Thompson was well-known for her truly caring personality and the interest she took in her students, both in and out of the classroom. “Sylvia was our secret weapon when dealing with our most challenging students,” said Mary McClellan, Lab Manager of the College Study Skills and Reading Lab. “She would never, ever give up on them, even when they gave up on themselves.”

Sylvia graduated from Withrow high school and received a Bachelor of Science in Education degree from UC and a Masters of Education degree from Ohio State. She taught in Columbus Public Schools for 31 years before coming to Raymond Walters, where she taught and enlightened students for thirteen more years. Thompson was also a State of Ohio evaluator for the CDA Certification program and had many other organizational ties.

Sylvia’s personality and unselfish ways touched many students and faculty members. In the words of Mary McClellan, “Sylvia was equally a fine educator and human being. She will be deeply missed, but in our hearts forever.
