November 30 Bedbug Update!

On November 30, RWC College Relations released the following statement regarding the ongoing battle against bedbugs on the campus:An update on our bed bug issues is necessary as several developments have occurred since the Dean’s email of November 23.

First, thanks to the thorough work of our Facilities crew, RWC’s Library is now re-opened. You may recall that, due to a second sighting of bed bugs in the library concourse on November 23, the Library was closed for appropriate isolation and treatment over the long holiday weekend.

Secondly, the pest control contractor brought the search dog onto campus Friday, November 26, for a search of some of the most populated areas of the college and, therefore, the most likely places for bed bugs. According to the contractor, “The K9 inspection performed on Friday 11/26/10 found no evidence of any bedbug activity in the library or adjoining offices. There were no alerts to bedbug activity in the Muntz building on that day.”

Specifically, the dog searched the following areas with no bedbugs discovered:

ú the One Stop Suite — Muntz 150 and adjoining offices
ú Outreach and Continuing Education – Muntz 151
ú Student Life offices and game room – Muntz 127
ú Muntz Lobby
ú the Library – Muntz 117
ú Conference Room – Muntz 111
ú the Dean’s Suite – Muntz 149
ú SAHB Lobby
ú Dental Hygiene waiting room
ú Dental Hygiene locker room

Unfortunately, the dog did detect bed bugs in one area of the Dental Hygiene clinic in SAHB 162, specifically the patient chair in station 19. The dog was removed from station 19 several times and then returned; each time he reacted positive for bed bug activity on the left arm and left base of the chair. The dog was then taken throughout the clinic area for a complete scan and all other chairs and areas in the clinic were ok. We immediately isolated station 19 and the exterminators treated the chair and surrounding area on Monday, November 29.

In addition, the dog reacted positively to the library chair and six of the books that were removed from the library several weeks ago. Because the dog continued to react to the books, they have been destroyed; the library chair, which had been removed at the first sighting, also was treated yesterday and will be checked again before being put back in use.

We have already scheduled inspections for winter break and again during spring break; of course, we may request additional scans by the dog if bed bugs are suspected or sighted. As a reminder, if you see or suspect bed bugs on campus, please contact Facilities Management immediately by calling 745-5708 or emailing “service.
