On Thursday, February 22, Leslie Roland, a tutor in the RWC Writing Lab held a soul food luncheon catered by herself. You may remember Leslie as a previous Feature Student who had a poem published in an African American publication. She wanted to share her heritage for Black History Month with her friends in the Writing Lab.
Leslie brought in kale and collard greens, fried chicken, BBQ chicken, macaroni and cheese, and cornbread. These staples of black families connect their community by bringing them together to talk and laugh. These traditions put love into the food just as they did in the movie “Soul Food.”
Eight teachers and students attended the luncheon, among them Kim Mason and Peggy Stromaier, who said, “It was great celebrating diversity.
