Video Game Review: “LittleBigPlanet 2” Is Out of This World

“LitttleBigPlanet” was a fantastic game about a small, living doll that looks like it was crafted out of a burlap sack and thusly dubbed Sackboy. With this little character, you could run, jump and play through literally hundreds of levels, both developer and user created. This was a revolutionary idea, designing a program that would not only allow players to play through the story mode created by developers, but also to create and publish entire worlds of their own for other players to romp through.

This opened up possibilities that not even the developers anticipated. They were actually looking at and learning from what the players were creating with their tools. The developers then went back and took a lot of these new ideas and feedback to incorporate them into the new “LittleBigPlanet 2.”

The new model is a lot like its predecessor in many ways, but it has learned a lot of new tricks as well. You not only get to run, jump and swing your way across this magnificent side-scrolling adventure, but now you have new gadgets and abilities, like a grappling hook that allows you to grab distant objects and pull yourself toward them or use them to swing yourself about in all directions.

You can pick up a pair of gloves that give you super strength so you can lift heavy objects and toss them at everything from switches to enemies. There is also a whole line of new and inventive hats that are for more than just style: some shoot water to douse flames, while others shoot sticky cupcakes that latch on to walls, switches, and even knockout baddies and more.

You can also ride on top of animals now, so you can shoot down foes with a bee, crawl up a tree with a caterpillar, or jump and go soaring through the air on the top of a bunny.

All-in-all, “LittleBigPlanet 2” is a fantastic game for the Playstation 3. The presentation and graphics are both simple and amazing. The music and sound effects are very well integrated into Craft World.

Gameplay is over the top with all of the new material and tools at your disposal and the lasting appeal is unmatched with the unique design and creativity. The replayability is out of this world, with players publishing hundreds of new levels for others to play on a daily basis. It is with great delight that I give “LittleBigPlanet 2” a 4.5 out of 5.
