Fashion at the Grammies: A Red Carpet Shakedown

If you know anything about me, you know that I love award shows. I love the star power, the glamour and the inspiring speeches. I love rooting for a film and, of course, seeing the highly anticipated artist (or film) of the year. So of course, I had to write about my three favorite (and least favorite) looks from the recent Grammy Show red carpet. Now, the Grammy awards are one of my favorite award shows of all time (along with the Oscars and the Tony’s). And, because it’s all about music, the Grammy Awards are a lot more creative and bizarre-which means that it’s right down my alley.

I mean, come on now, Lady Gaga arrived in an egg, for God’s sake. (I love that woman and she sure knows how to make an entrance.) We saw a lot of interesting looks, but here are my highs and lows:

Let’s start with the flops of the night. In third place, we have singer-songwriter Rhianna, who wore a fluffy, feathery dress that looked fit for any Who from Whoville. Enough said.

Meanwhile, singer/model/actress Ciara flopped into second place. Everyone was gushing over her outfit, but I wasn’t a fan. I can’t even describe it. The top was like a blue and white gladiator, while the bottom was like a spring dress with some bohemian bracelets. There was no fluidity, and it all just ended up looking like a big mess.

As for my worst, the award goes to recording artist Gramma Funk. She stepped out in a wild west styled outfit that was way too young for her. Listen, sweetheart, it’s not such a great idea to have your outfit tailored so that your breasts are spilling out. Next time, instead of the sexy Wild West barmaid, try working the elegant and sophisticated look.

And now for the cream of the crop, the best of the best. In third place was Florence Welch, from the fantastic band Florence + The Machines (which I would strongly suggest checking out). She wore a swan inspired dress that was nothing short of stunning, and it perfectly fit Florence’s sense of creative style.

In second place was the beautiful Diana Argon, who wore a beautiful, slimming black dress that was simple but edgy.

And the Grand Prize goes to Lady Gaga.

I know what you’re thinking: Josh, she was in an egg, for goodness sake. But, if you think about it, she really was wearing something that was the epitome of artistry: complete creative commitment. And, after all, isn’t that what the Grammies and music are all about? Art, self-expression, and commitment.
