Before you sign up for classes this Spring Quarter, or even if you already have, consider a class called Mastering Sentence Skills (28-ENGL-150-001). The aim of this class, which will be taught by Professor Barbara Hansen, is to eliminate problems with basic grammar and train a student to write clear and effective sentences. Mastering Sentence Skills is a course for any student who is having problems with basic English skills, or is a working employee who needs to hone his or her writing skills, or would just like to review the rules of punctuation and grammar.
According to Professor Hansen, “It is an effective class for students who have attempted Business English, Preparatory English, or Freshman Composition 101, 102, or 103 and had difficulty doing well because they lacked basic skills in sentence structure, punctuation, or grammar.”
It’s not just the professor who feels this way, because it also comes highly recommended by former students. After completing Mastering Sentence Skills, several students have said that they believed it should be a requirement for all incoming students. One student said,” I expected Prep English to teach me these skills, but it didn’t. [Professor Hansen] taught me what I needed earlier.”
Another expressed a regret: “Why isn’t this required before Business English? I wish I’d taken this before I enrolled in Business English. I had to withdraw.”
