Due to the tremendous response from people around the world, including some RWC students, good has, once again, conquered evil. Remember Amina Lawal, the 30 year old Muslim woman from northern Nigeria? She was, on March 22, 2002, sentenced to death by stoning, according to Amnesty International, after she allegedly confessed to having a child while divorced.
Amnesty International noted that adultery is a crime punishable by death under the newly adopted Quranic-based Shari’ah law. While Lawal had been sentenced to death, the alleged father denied paternity and all charges had been dropped against him.
After the overwhelming number of letters forwarded to Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo and Minister of Justice Kanu Godwin by Amnesty International, Lawal’s death sentence has been overturned. It is uncertain whether she will be jailed, but right now Lawal is enjoying unexpected time with her infant child.
