Three Study Abroad Programs Slated for Next Summer

Do you want to study abroad? Raymond Walters College is offering three exciting trips during the summer of 2010-one to Germany, one to Costa Rica, and one to Great Britain. During the trip to Germany, students will be able to study German language and culture at the Technische Universitaet of Ilmenau, Germany. They will also be able to participate in field trips, excursions, daily sports and activities. In addition, they will travel to Berlin and experience the German culture while learning the works and accomplishments of famous men like Martin Luther, Freidrich Schiller, and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.

The projected cost is $2,500, which includes travel expenses, RWC tuition and fees, and living expenses. Professor Debbie Page will lead the program.

The second is a study abroad trip to Costa Rica, in which students will be immersed in the Spanish language and Costa Rican culture, while living with a Costa Rican family. Students will be studying the Spanish language at the Intercultura Language Institution and will discover the biodiversity that Costa Rica has to offer in national parks and rainforests. The projected cost is $2,500. Professor Angie Woods will be the program leader.

The third RWC study abroad trip will be to Great Britain. This trip will offer two courses for students to pick from. The first is a history course taught by Professor Andrea Kornbluh entitled “Tea & The British Empire: History, Memory and Tourism.” Students will be introduced to the history of the British Empire and one of the most popular British drinks, tea. Students will also be introduced to museum collections, urban landscapes, and botanical collections.

The other course of the British study abroad trip is an English course entitled “Literature of the British Colonial Past: The Example of India,” to be taught by Professor Rita Kumar. In this course, students will discover the impact that British colonization had on both the society and literature through a series of field trips, films, and readings.

Students can take one or both of these courses. The projected cost for the British trip is $3,000.

Information and application forms for all three programs are available on the RWC website at a href=”http://www.rwc.uc.edu/SAEC/index.html”>http://www.rwc.uc.edu/SAEC/index.html.

Why should you study abroad? Sue Sipple, RWC Professor of English, calls it a “fantastic experience, not only in the classroom experience but in language and culture; and it’s just fun! So just do it.”

It is a wonderful opportunity to meet new people, experience a new culture, and learn more about the history of the country you will visit, Sipple added.

There are many scholarships and grants available for students studying abroad. Information can be found on the UC International Programs section of the UC website at www.uc.edu/global/.
