Twitter: A New Means of Social Networking

Twitter is a name that is well known throughout the world these days. So instead of asking what Twitter is, you might ask what’s the point of it? Well, just to fill in those who don’t know what Twitter is, here is a brief definition. Twitter is a free social networking and mini blogging site that allows you to send and read messages from people called tweets. These tweets are only allowed to be 140 characters or less and are displayed to all those who follow you.

In 2006, Jack Dorsey, Biz Stone and Evan Williams created what is known today as Twitter. But it wasn’t until 2007 that Twitter popularity hit its tipping point. That year tweets per day went from 20,000 to 60,000.

Now, on to answering what’s the point. Twitter was designed to answer the question “What are you doing?” in 140 characters or less. However, as time has progressed, Twitter has been used in six different categories: news, spam, self-promotion, pointless babble, conversation, and pass-along value.

With this being said, you can use Twitter just to say what you are doing. Or you can branch out from that and promote events or other things.

Not only can you post messages, but you can also follow people such as friends, acquaintances, celebrities, or just some random person you came across who seems interesting. By following someone, you are able to see what they post, and you can also send them a reply message by putting an @ in front of their username and typing a message.

Twitter also allows you to also post pictures and videos, which compliment your post. While many think Twitter is stalker related, it is highly secure. It allows you to mark your profile as private so only people you approve can follow you, and it also allows you to block people you would not like to read your post. With Twitter you can also eliminate having to update statuses on MySpace and Facebook.

Twitter lets you link your Facebook and MySpace accounts, so that when you post an update on Twitter it updates your post on Facebook and MySpace. Twitter has also moved up into the top 3 social networking sites only behind Facebook and MySpace. Twitter is a new and growing trend. Join and be a part of it.
