As if the hype from the film “The Dark Knight” was not enough, gamers can now join the celebration with “Batman: Arkham Asylum.” The game was released on August 25, 2009 for Playstation 3 and Xbox360. Eidos Interactive, Rocksteady Studios, and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment all came together for this project.
So, the storyline: The Joker has escaped and completely overrun Arkham Asylum, the infamous Gotham City psychiatric hospital for all the major criminals and nutcases, who are usually one in the same. Speaking of the Joker, did I mention that he set all the criminals free? Getting to him won’t be as easy this time. Armed with Batman’s usual utility belt of cool gadgets, and really cashing in on his physical prowess, players must work their way through the asylum.and the newly freed inmates.
I have heard mixed feelings from those who either absolutely loved the game, or were not that fond of it. Some found that it didn’t challenge them enough, while others were totally thrilled with the game play. Even if you don’t enjoy playing Batman, you are sure to enjoy the scenery. As you explore, you’ll find that there are six different buildings that are part of the asylum and each one has seemingly limitless puzzles and baddies to overcome. Let me also mention that Kevin Conroy, Mark Hamill, and Arleen Sorkin revive their voice-over roles from “Batman: The Animated Series” as Batman, the Joker, and Harley Quinn. Fans of the television series were delighted upon hearing those familiar voices.
If you are a long-time fan of the Batman franchise (like myself!), or you are just looking to play a very spooky game that doesn’t involve macabre demonesque creatures (a la the “Silent Hill” series), then this game is for you. Let me finish though by saying that if you play while the lights are out some night, the Joker’s laughter just might send more than a few chills down your spine.
